We rescue elephants and mahouts across Thailand

The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) was set up primarily to help elephants that cannot help themselves: for those that find themselves, through abuse or other circumstances, unable to provide and maintain an income for themselves, for their mahouts and their families.

Why Do Thailand’s Elephants Need Help ?

GTAEF at all times endeavour to ensure that net good is done and that our action in helping one elephant does not adversely affect others.

Captive Elephant Welfare

We provide a home for elephants who previously lived on the streets, performed shows or were at illegal logging camps. GTAEF rents elephants and provides fodder, a forest environment and shelter as well as vet care; along with food, accommodation, health care and insurance for mahouts and their families. We also work with the Government and other organizations in ‘bigger picture’ projects throughout South East Asia on strategic projects to improve conditions for all captive elephants.

Research and Education

GTAEF regularly hosts local and international school groups on site for educational tours as well as running a ‘Virtual Fieldtrip’ programme free of charge for any educational facility around the world, our Lockdown Livestreams during COVID garnered over 30,000 interactions in 2021 alone and our Elephant Professional Lectures are still available on Youtube. We pride ourselves on funding and facilitating research, have been mentioned in multiple peer reviewed published papers and regularly host scientists from different universities to perform non-invasive research on site. We believe that a better scientific understanding of elephants’ needs is essential in both Captive Elephant Welfare and Wild Elephant Conservation.

Wild Elephant Conservation

GTAEF is active in a number of wild elephant areas most notably funding carefully chosen projects with professional practitioners that help turn Human Elephant Conflict into Human Elephant Coexistence where wild elephants regularly forage on human crops, a situation that too often leads to anger and casualties on both sides, as well as funding the complete protection of an 18,000ha wildlife haven and elephant corridor in Cambodia.

Our Projects

We aim to assist captive elephants by improving their lives and welfare whilst also participating in the conservation of wild elephant populations to ensure their survival.
